Before you pour that leftover bacon grease down your sink, let’s talk about the damage that can be done. You want to keep your kitchen sink healthy and your plumbing free from issues. Otherwise, you may incur some unwelcome expenses.

Pouring warm bacon grease down your sink drain may seem simple enough. In its liquid form, it slides down so easily. But then what happens? As it cools, it solidifies and can clog your drains. Also, the combination of grease and food chunks can form “fatbergs” in your septic system. So, always use a paper towel to wipe off grease from pans or plates and toss that into your trash.

Use a good sink strainer basket to catch any food chunks from your dishes. You do not want to wash food chunks down your drain or have them get washed off in your dishwasher. You can find a variety of strainer baskets made from stainless steel or silicone. Both work well and can be tossed into the dishwasher. The silicone ones are more prone to staining, so stainless steel ones might look better longer.
